An electrician who sank six pints of Stella then crashed his VW Golf on the way home acted out of character by driving drunk, a court heard.

Aaron Godfrey-Keeley, 24, had been drinking while he watched the football on April 16 then made the rash decision to drink his blue 57-plate VW Golf home.

Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard he crashed into a staddle stone by the side of the road in Mill Lane, Chalgrove.

Godfrey-Keeley, who was the only one in the car when it crashed, stayed at the roadside and waited for the police to arrive.

He failed a breathalyser test at the roadside and was taken back to the police station. Checks showed he had 112 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcgs.

Appearing before the justices on Wednesday morning, Godfrey-Keeley, of Beech Close, Watlington, pleaded guilty to drink driving. He had no previous convictions.

Mitigating, India Ferris said her client was ‘shocked’ by what he had done and had expressed remorse.

He was given a community order with 100 hours of unpaid work, banned from driving for 26 months and ordered to pay £180 in costs and surcharge.
