Autumn 2021
August and September: Four drug users in the Oxford area die after overdosing on contaminated heroin. Three deaths are linked to man-made opiate isotonitazine, which researchers say is 500 times more potent than morphone
September 16: Colin Sumner, whose Stowford Road flat Brown was using on the day of the stabbing, sends texts to users warning them of deaths ‘from the D’ – slang for ‘dark’ or heroin
October 8, 2021
9.52am: The ‘Bob’ line, for which Brown admitted running drugs, sends a bulk text advertising drugs for sale in ‘fat sizes’. Lee Butler was among the recipients
11.21am: Another text from the Bob line to Mr Butler, offering three drug wraps for £20
11.41am: Donna Osbourne texts Mr Butler ‘any luck mate?’ She tells jurors that Mr Butler had woken her up when he called asking if she wanted to split the cost of some drugs. The friends would score together
1.52pm: Brown is seen handing Raymond Bulgin drugs outside the Spar shop in Barton's Underhill Circus
3.49pm: Another advertising message from the Bob line, prompting a number of calls from Barton users
4pm: Mr Butler calls Ms Osbourne and they agree to go halves on £20-worth of crack cocaine
5.12pm-5.45pm: Calls between the friends and the Bob line phone organising the deal. They tell the line handler that they don’t want heroin as the quality was ‘s***’
5.50pm: Brown stabs Mr Butler and flees
5.51pm: Donna calls 999 and members of the public come to her aid
5.50pm-6.05pm: Brown goes first to Colin Sumner’s flat in Stowford Road, where he claims he gives two knives to Bob line controller ‘Jake’ then walks to Risinghurst Post Office and buys Magnum tonic wine and cigarette papers before getting on the number eight bus
6pm: Paramedics arrive at Bayswater Road
6.41pm: Mr Butler dies
6.45pm: Brown alights bus at Oxford Brookes, leaving behind his phone
7pm: Taxi takes Brown to friend Abu Bakkar’s house in Wood Farm, where he activates a new sim card
After 8.30pm: Brown arrives at Kayleigh Kimber-Johnson’s home in Hengrove Close, Barton. He is jumpy and appears shocked when he learns of Mr Butler’s death
October 9
12.15am: Police arrive in Hengrove Close to arrest Brown. They hear the noise of him jumping a garden fence and believe he has escaped into a nature reserve behind the house. A dog unit is called in
1.13am: Brown is arrested. He later answers no comment to questions in interview
