Oxford was extremely peaceful on Easter morning, with the roads so quiet you could hear hymns spilling out of churches.

There were very few people on the High Street, but inside the University Church, every pew was packed full, including most of the gallery. 

Welcoming people of all faiths, the church opened the service to all members of the public who were given a programme and a candle on entry.

As someone who doesn't usually go to church, I was relieved that the programme had a complete step by step of the service, and exactly what to say, do and when.

With the lighting of the Paschal candle, a symbol of Jesus's resurrection, and the lighting of our candles too, ancient Easter ceremony began.

The Deacon and University Church choir sang absolutely beautifully, Organist James Brown's playing was impressive, and a powerful sermon was given by Reverend Dr William Lamb.

The Revd pointed out the once-in-30-years occurrence of Easter weekend overlapping with Passover (Pesach) and Ramadan and talked about the common ground between religions.

He also spoke about the war in Ukraine, and the importance of supporting one another. 

The Easter ceremony seemed to go without any major hitches, save a moment when a small yelp was heard from the gallery as someone's candle got out of control. 

But by the time we, the people in the pews below, noticed it had already been sorted out.
