A disgruntled boyfriend turned up uninvited at a Banbury bowling alley, threatening his partner’s friends then assaulted three police officers called-in by concerned witnesses.

Oliver Bailey, 21, went to the Lakeside Superbowl on March 6 intending to speak to the woman, Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard. He was unwelcome at the bowling alley, where Bailey’s girlfriend was meeting friends.

Prosecutor Nony Umeniyora said that Bailey followed the woman around. He picked up a pool cue, although he did not use it. He was unpleasant to her friends.

Police were called and, during his arrest, he punched one officer in the face and bent another constable’s wrist back.

Appearing before the magistrates’ court this week, Bailey, of Windsor Drive, Brackley, pleaded guilty to assaulting emergency workers, assault by beating and threatening behaviour. He had one previous conviction, for resisting a constable in the course of his duty.

Bethan Chichester, defending, asked the justices to adjourn the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

“Mr Bailey is a young man who’s acted very foolishly,” she said.

The incident stemmed from an argument with his partner. He visited the bowling alley to ‘try and resolve the matter and it has got out of hand’.

Bailey was bailed by the magistrates to return to court on May 11 for sentence. A probation service pre-sentence report was ordered.
