Honest Stationery has been serving customers in Cowley Road for about 40 years.

Up until now, the east Oxford shop has always focused on pens and paper and greeting cards.

But now owner Nay Aung is branching out by selling flowers and plants.

It’s early days for Mr Aung as a florist but he says his customers are welcoming the opportunity to buy flowers along with their greeting cards.

They can also order online, and a website is currently being developed.

Originally from Burma, Mr Aung took over the business about five years ago and runs it with his sister.

He said the coronavirus lockdowns were very challenging but he is now hoping business will pick up, with the continued support of his local customers.

Mr Aung added: “I have been living in Oxford for about 14 years - I used to be an area manager for Subway and then five years ago I bought the business.

“Regular customers come in here for their stationery supplies - it’s very traditional - we changed the layout a little bit but I don’t think too much has changed over the years.

“People can buy as much or as little as they want - they don’t have to buy in bulk.

“We stock very good quality products and sell items individually.”

Mr Aung said a Post Office branch used to operate from the store but he has no intention of applying to open a branch.

He added: “Customers are just getting used to the idea that we are now selling flowers and plants as well as stationery, and we want the support of our local customers to continue.”

The section at the back of the store where the post office branch used to operate is now dedicated to the florists, called Yuki Flowers.

Mr Aung said he was concerned to hear that another Oxford stationery shop, Pen to Paper, in London Road, Headington, has announced that it is to close.

In a tweet in February, Pen to Paper said: “After 30 happy years in Headington, we’re sad to announce that we’re closing. Bargains to be had.”

This announcement followed the closure of Prices stationers in Abingdon in October, after 31 years of trading.

The owners said many regular customers had become friends with them over the years.

Mr Aung said he was hopeful customers would continue to support the shop because of its competitive pricing for stationery supplies, and plants. He added: “Greeting cards and flowers is a very good combination for celebrations like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

“Our stationery supplies come from the UK, Germany and France and our flowers come from the Netherlands.

"We will deliver flowers without charge in the Oxford area OX1 to OX4 area with a minimum spend of £35.”
