An award-winning West End musical will hit the stage in Oxford this month.

Musical comedy Waitress will play at the New Theatre Oxford, on George Street, from April 25 to 30.

Based on a 2008 film, the musical tells the story of a waitress in an abusive relationship with her husband. After she unexpectedly becomes pregnant she begins an affair with her doctor. Looking for a way out of her troubles, a pie baking contest and its grand prize could be her chance.

The synopsis of the show reads: ‘Meet Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of some happiness in her life. When a hot new doctor arrives in town, life gets complicated. With the support of her workmates Becky and Dawn, Jenna overcomes the challenges she faces and finds that laughter, love and friendship can provide the perfect recipe for happiness.’

The show stars Chelsea Halfpenny (Emmerdale, 9 to 5 The Musical) as lead character Jenna, she plays opposite Busted singer Matt Willis as Dr Pomatter. Sandra Marvin (Emmerdale, Hairspray) takes on the role of Becky while Evelyn Hoskins (Waitress, Spring Awakening) plays Dawn.

The show was created by a female-led team, with music and lyrics by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, the book was written by screenwriter Jessie Nelson and direction by Tony winner Diane Paulus.
