RESIDENTS were asked to stay inside last night after a huge fire at a rubbish dump.

This morning firefighters in Oxfordshire are still at the scene.

The services were first called to the blaze at the landfill opposite Appleford and The Ladygrove in Didcot at 21:11 last night.

Taking to Facebook, police officers asked everyone who lives in the area to 'close windows' because of the 'unpleasant smell' and 'lots of smoke'.

Thames Valley Police wrote: "Officers from Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service are currently on scene at a large fire within the landfill site adjacent to Appleford and The Ladygrove in Didcot.

"If you live in Didcot, especially on The Ladygrove please close your windows and remain inside this evening. There is an unpleasant smell and a lot of smoke in the area.

"Crews will remain on scene for the foreseeable. Please don't visit the area, Thank you."

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue also took to social media to warn people.

Firefighters explained: "Eight fire crews from Didcot (2), Abingdon (2), Wantage, Wallingford and Rewley Road Oxford (2), supported by three water carriers from Wheatley, Bracknell and Royal Wooton Bassett have been dealing with this incident initially.

"In addition our Incident Command Unit from Slade Park and our High Volume Pumping unit from Banbury Fire Station are currently also attending, working with site staff and Thames Valley Police.

"We will be on site overnight and into tomorrow dealing with the incident with crews from Carterton Fire Station and Slade Park also attending."
