The former home of the keyboard player from rock band Deep Purple is up for sale.

Musician Jon Lord lived in Burntwood Hall in Goring-on-Thames in the 1980s.

Oxford Mail:

Mr Lord co-founded the legendary group, considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, in 1968 and co-wrote many of their songs including the iconic Smoke on the Water.

The eight bedroom property, which is now on the market with a guide price of £8.5million, was the inspiration for the song Burntwood which appeared on Mr Lord’s debut solo album released in 1982.

The country house, which comes with a bowling alley, games room and cinema room, is in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Oxford Mail:

Mr Lord, a cricket enthusiast, also installed a cricket pitch, pavilion and scoreboard at the front of the house, while other later additions include a gym, sauna, tennis court and swimming pool area with outdoor kitchen and pizza oven.

Mr Lord died in 2012 and Burntwood Hall has had several owners since he lived in the property.

The current owners are Kate Gethin and her husband Ian who moved in in 2009.

Mrs Gethin said: “The link with Jon Lord often provides an interesting talking point and we have seen photographs of him sitting at a piano in the drawing room.

"The piece of music he named after the house is instrumental and I think it really captures the spirit of the property and surrounding countryside.

"It was obviously an inspirational and relaxing place for him to live – as it has been for us and I’m sure will be for others.”

Deep Purple's most successful line-up consisted of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover (bass), who joined Mr Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar).

The line-up has also included David Coverdale from Whitesnake.

Victoria Knight, from Savills in Henley, which is marketing the home, said: “Originally built in 1905, Burntwood Hall is an exceptional house that takes full advantage of its south facing position with commanding views of the surrounding countryside.

Oxford Mail:

“The current owners have undertaken a thorough and stylish programme of restoration and renovation, paying great attention to detail and creating a family home with extensive leisure facilities.”
