An Oxford family is waiting for news that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has landed back in the UK.

Former Headington School teacher Rosemary Gay is the aunt of Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe's husband Richard Ratcliffe and she and her husband Colin have been campaigning for Nazanin's release since she was jailed in Tehran by the Iranian authorities.

Nazanin is now returning to Britain after the Government settled an outstanding £400m debt owed to the regime in Tehran, it has been reported.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe and a second dual national, Anoosheh Ashoori, will soon be reunited with their families in the UK after being released by the Iranian authorities.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe arrived at Muscat in Oman at about 3.30pm UK time and will now travel onto RAF Brize Norton on a Titan Airways Boeing jet which has been chartered privately by the UK government. She is set to arrive in the UK at 10.30pm

Mrs Gay said: "We need her home - once she is home that will be fabulous.

"We have seen the news and as a family we are keeping our fingers crossed.

"I haven't spoken to Richard for a few days but I have been in touch with his mother.

"As far as we know Nazanin has had her passport returned.

"I'm sure there will be a family reunion at some point but Nazanin and Richard will need time first to be together as a family.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was delighted the two women will be reunited with their families" after years in detention.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe will be reunited with her daughter Gabriella and her husband, who has campaigned tirelessly for her release.

She had been held in Iran since 2016 - accused of spying, an accusation she strenuously denied.

It is understood the UK agreed to pay £393.8m owed to Iran after it cancelled an order of Chieftain tanks following the overthrow of the Shah in the revolution of 1979.

Ms Truss tweeted: “I can confirm Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori will return to the UK today, and Morad Tahbaz has been released from prison on furlough. They will be reunited with their families later today."
