The inquest has been opened into the death of cyclist Dr Ling Felce.

Dr Felce, a research scientist at the University of Oxford and a mum-of-two, was killed in a crash with a tipper lorry on The Plain roundabout on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 1.

Scores of people attended a vigil held exactly a week after her death. A large number of flowers remain at the scene - opposite the Ballroom Emporium clothes shop - where she lost her life.

Oxford Mail:

At a short hearing at Oxford Coroner’s Court this afternoon, senior coroner for Oxfordshire Darren Salter opened the inquest into the tragedy.

The court heard she was a 35-year-old married woman, born in Malaysia in 1986.

Her death was verified by a paramedic at 2.39pm on March 1 after the collision at The Plain, Mr Salter said.

The cause of Dr Felce’s death was given as multiple injuries.

Mr Salter adjourned the case for a full inquest, which will be held on September 20, but added: “There is of course an ongoing police investigation.”

Inquests do not always take place where an unnatural death results in a prosecution in the criminal courts.

Earlier this month, Robert Whiting, 39, of Brome Place, Barton, appeared before the Oxford magistrates charged with causing death by careless driving and associated offences.

The defendant, who stood in the dock wearing a grey tracksuit jumper and blue jeans, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He entered no pleas and was remanded to appear in front of a crown court judge on March 28.
