The refurbishment of historic pub The Chequers in Oxford cost £400,000.

Pub company Nicholson's confirmed it had spent this amount on the revamp for the hostelry, which is set back from the city's High Street.

Nicholson's says the revamp has allowed the pub to keep its traditional look and feel.

Along with new soft furnishings, drinkers can expect five new TV screens to catch all the sporting action across BT and Sky Sports.

It's good news for football fans who want to catch up with Premier League action and Champions League games.

As a cask and gin house specialist, the pub welcomes students, tourists, office workers and sports fans.

Drinkers can enjoy everything you would expect to find on a respectable British pub menu including traditional pies, burgers and fish and chips.

The investment has been welcomed by Dave Richardson, of the Oxford branch of real ale group CAMRA, who said Nicholson's had invested a 'significant amount'.

He added: "The Chequers is one of our most historic and atmospheric pubs, and it's good to see a sympathetic refurb carried out by M&B which owns the Nicholson's brand which operates it.

Oxford Mail:

"Investing in pubs needs to be ongoing despite the ravages of the pandemic, and hopefully The Chequers will regain its place as one of the top real ale and historic venues in the city."

The pub now runs Tap Tuesday which is 20% off all draught products for everyone from 5pm every Tuesday.

It is now displaying all sporting events as it has Sky and BT Sports channels, with extra screens added during the refurbishment.

On May Morning the pub will be open from 5.30am serving breakfast and beer with live music from 6am.

Speaking about the revamp earlier, general manager Kerry Skrzypiec, said: "It’s been fantastic seeing the pub come together over the last couple of weeks.

"Both myself and the team are incredibly excited to welcome new and familiar guests over the coming days and we hope they love the transformation."

The Chequers Inn dates back to 1279 and has been an exhibition hall for animals and inventors, and a base for money lenders.

It is also claimed the pub also has a secret tunnel that leads to The Mitre in High Street.

Oxford Mail:

While Nicholson's has invested in The Chequers, Lincoln College closed The Mitre in 2019 and it has not reopened.
