An Oxford MP is pushing for more career guidance in schools so that “Oxford youngsters can make the most of the opportunities on our doorstep”.

Anneliese Dodds MP is backing Labour’s plan to deliver professional careers guidance in school as part of the Party’s plan to ensure young people leave education ready for work and for life, during National Careers Week.

The MP’s call comes at a time when there are growing employment opportunities in Oxford in a variety of new technologies and services. However, she also highlights there is also deprivation and a lack of advice and knowledge that can hold young people back.

Anneliese Dodds, MP for Oxford East said: “Careers guidance is essential for ensuring young people are aware of the opportunities open to them. Here in Oxford, we have ground-breaking research, world-class advanced manufacturing and an internationally-recognised cultural and visitor sector - but many young people I meet are unaware of what’s taking place on their doorstep, and how they can be part of it.

"Our secondary schools, and groups like the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, are working hard on this- but they need proper government backing.

"It was so disappointing to see Conservative MPs voting against Labour’s plans to reintroduce this essential support for young people, after abolishing the former careers service. But I’ll keep pushing for it - our local young people deserve nothing less."
