Today is the final day teachers have planned strike action following a dispute over pensions.

Seventy-five teachers from Oxford High School, a private girls’ school off Banbury Road, voted to take industrial action in protest at changes to their pension.

The Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), which runs Oxford High, is planning to withdraw from the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), of which most teachers nationally are a part.

In a statement from GDST it explains a new offer has been tabled which gives our teachers the choice between continued membership of the TPS under “favourable terms” or joining the GDST Flexible Pension Plan.

However, the National Education Union (NEU) rejected the request and continued with strike action.

GDST has said their proposal gives teachers a “personal choice about how they receive their total reward”.

The GDST is offering teachers a pay rise along with continued membership of the TPS.

A spokesperson from GDST said: “GDST has consistently asked the NEU to suspend strike action while these new proposals are considered by teachers. Despite concerted effort throughout the day on Friday and again on Monday, the NEU has declined to engage with these new proposals on behalf of their members.”

This comes as parents have threatened to withhold fees to the private girls’ school as a counter-strike after industrial action disrupted lessons.

A spokesperson from GDST said: “This is a matter between GDST and parents and we will not comment in the media before communicating with our parents.”
