A CORNER shop has been slammed with a one-star food hygiene rating after it displayed out of date sandwiches.

Duhok News, a newsagent on 293 Iffley Road in Oxford, has been told by food hygiene inspectors that it requires "major improvement".

The shop sells a variety of items including sweets, drinks, and sandwiches.

A hygiene inspector from Oxford City Council visited the shop unannounced on November 8, 2021 and gave Duhok News an overall score of one out of a possible five stars.

According to the Scores on the Doors website the Iffley Road shop was given a mark of "improvement necessary" for its food hygiene and safety, a mark of "good" for the cleanliness and layout of the shop and "major improvement necessary" for the performance of the management.

In a report of the inspection Oxford City Council highlight the reasons for the low score, this includes displaying out of date food.

The inspection was carried out on November 8, and sandwiches that expired on November 6, were still on display for customers to buy.

The shop owners were told by inspectors that it is an offence to have food on display after the use by date and that the expired food should be put in an area where it is "obviously not for sale".

Managers at Duhok News were also criticised for having an untidy sink area. Images in the report show the sink with peeling paint and a lack of hand-washing facilities.

Inspectors told the shop managers to remove the peeling paint and cover with a smooth, non-porous washable surface within one month. The shop was also told to have hand soap and hygienic hand drying facilities, such as paper towels, available at this sink at all times.

When council inspectors visited the shop, it was found that there were no written daily checks on the food available to view. The last time this had been done was in April, six months before the hygiene inspection.

Managers at Duhok News were told to "ensure daily checks are completed and recorded daily".

Duhok News were not available for a comment, but Google reviews of the shop only show positive feedback. Customers have left four-star reviews commenting on the good variety of food on offer including halal options and fresh bread.
