A PUB in Oxford has hit out at those who fail to cancel bookings.

The Black Boy Pub, in Headington, had 23 ‘no-shows’ on Saturday evening, after several people who booked tables in advance did not turn up.

The pub called out on those who failed to cancel, stating that the hospitality industry is ‘still fragile’ after the pandemic.

Writing on Twitter, the owners said: “Sharing some sad news today, we had 23 no-shows yesterday - 23.

“A table of 10, a table of six, and some tables of two.

“Our industry is still in recovery, if your plans change, call and cancel. Simple.

“It’s not ok.”

The Tweet provoked a reaction from several other locals in the area, many of whom suggested the pub should implement a charge for no-shows.

Philip Mountford, who is a chemistry professor at the University of Oxford, said: “I’m a regular (albeit infrequent) at The Black Boy and would be totally willing to give a credit card number for a fixed no-show penalty.”

Maria Duff echoed the same sentiment, adding: “Appalling. Why do people do this! I agree with other comments, maybe time to take credit card details”

Others expressed anger at the sheer number of people who failed to turn up to their bookings on Saturday.

Monika Blackwell, who works at Headington Prep School, said: “I think this behaviour is disgraceful, so sorry people do this to you and other establishments.”

Charl Engela added: “That’s really awful. People can be so rotten sometimes.”
