Here we look back at some archive photos of the early 1960s in Oxford when young women competed for the title of Oxford Community Girl and the Rolling Stones were persuaded to play a gig at Oxford University’s Magdalen College.

Blackbird Leys community centre scored a home victory when one of its members was voted Oxford Community Girl 1964.

Ann Bradford, 16, was given the highest number of points in the contest, which was held before a packed audience at the centre.

The judges included Oxford Cheetahs’ speedway rider Arne Pander and Percy Lewis, former British Empire featherweight boxing champion.

There was a tie for second place between Susan Sanders, 16, of Northway community centre, and Diana Cox, 17, of the Florence Park centre.

The same year, 1964, the Stones performed at Magdalen College.

The Stones were not that well known when they were booked to play but were famous by the time of the concert.
