Two public bicycle repair stands which enable cyclists to fix their bikes without flipping them upside down are being installed on The Leys.

The work stands allow you to stand your bike in the ideal position when carrying out repair or maintenance work without upturning it and damaging the handlebars.

The first bright-green Mantis Cycle Repair stand is already in place just outside the Skate Park and the second has been installed next to the cycle racks alongside Smarts fish and chip shop in the Market Square.

The stands are designed for any cyclist to be able to use, with picture instructions on how to safely load up the bike to working height.

Robust, high-quality tools for all types of repair from mending punctures and making adjustments to more advanced repairs are tucked inside the stand and there is also a hand pump.

The stands are aimed at helping to support cycling as an active travel choice by minimising disruption for cyclists if they need to resolve minor issues mid-journey.

They also offer opportunities to swap skills and help each other to keep on the road.

Witney Town Councillor Liz Duncan, who proposed the installation of the racks, said she was delighted to see them in place.

She said: “I first saw a bike repair stand in Alton town centre last year. It was being actively used by young people and I felt would be a great idea for Witney.

"When funding became available my colleagues on the Town Council agreed with the idea and council officers went ahead with our application.

"It’s wonderful to see them installed now. I’ve already checked out the pump which works a treat! Do have a look and maybe try it out yourself.”

The Town Council was able to offset some of the cost with funding from Oxfordshire County Council who are supporting active travel initiatives across the county.

The funding was secured through a local charity, Active Oxfordshire, which is dedicated to fighting inactivity and tackling inequality to ensure that every adult and child in Oxfordshire has opportunities to get more active.

Cllr Duncan Enright, of Oxfordshire County Council and Witney Town Council, said: "It would be great if Witney could become the best market town for cyclists. Gradually we are trying to improve bike parking and facilities in town, to make it a safe, healthy, convenient way to travel for residents of all ages.

"These new bike repair stands are part of that effort - and while there is still a long way to go it is great that the County and Town Councils are working together on this."
