A paramedic was chased around a table by a drunken patient shouting ‘I’m going to deck you’.

Reece Weston, 29, later told police he had no memory of the escapade – which also saw him threaten to ‘f***ing kill’ the male paramedic.

Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard that Weston had called the ambulance service out to his room at O’Hanlon House homeless hostel on April 18 last year.

When the emergency workers were showed into his hostel room, the defendant appeared to be unconscious. However, he had a history of feigning unconsciousness so the paramedic treating him pressed on his thigh saying ‘Reece, come on’.

Weston kicked out with his leg. Having anticipated that might happen, the paramedic managed to move out of the way unscathed and told his patient: “If you’re going to behave like this we’re going to go.”

Prosecutor Darren Neal said Weston got up and threatened to kill the paramedic, who retreated with his crewmate to a communal area.

The defendant was said to have chased the ambulance worker around a table for half a minute, saying: “I’m going to deck you, I’m going to f***ing kill you.” He later threatened: “I’m going to burn you alive.” He was restrained by members of staff at O’Hanlon House.

Appearing before Oxford magistrates, Weston, now of Horsefair, Chipping Norton, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker. He had previous convictions for similar assaults.

In mitigation, it was said that Weston suffered from severe autism. Having previously ‘fallen through the cracks’, he had now been moved to supported accommodation in Chipping Norton and was receiving life-changing support from a specialist social worker. He was ‘deeply remorseful’.

The day of the assault marked the two year anniversary of his grandfather’s death and he had turned to his ‘one and only coping mechanism’, magistrates were told.

The JPs imposed a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered he pay £100 compensation to the paramedic and a £22 victim surcharge.

The conditional discharge means that he could be resentenced for the assault if he is convicted of another crime in the next year.
