Oxford Mail readers have been giving their views on the A34 and how to make the dual carriageway safer.

Politicians expressed safety concerns about the A34, after 12 crashes took place on the route in Oxfordshire earlier this month - nearly one every other day.

The crashes, and other incidents, often caused long delays for drivers and in some cases back traffic up for miles.

Oxford East MP Anneliese Dodds said: “I am deeply concerned by the recent spate of accidents on the A34 which have caused significant disruption to residents.”

Greg Stone, Network Highways route manager, told the Oxford Mail that Highways England recently completed £12m of safety improvements on the road, including signage, road markings and upgrading and removing laybys.

He said: “The A34 improvements project is currently exploring opportunities to reduce congestion and improve safety on the A34 between the M4 and M40.

Our network is a vital part of everyone’s life and we’ll never stop searching for ways to improve on safety and reliability.” Readers gave their views on the Oxford Mail’s Facebook page.

TOM JORDON: “Any road in the world is dangerous if people don’t pay attention, A34 is no different!”

GIORGOS KOUTSOGIANNIS: “The Α34 should be three lanes years ago.”

JAEMI PATEL: “I’d love to see a breakdown of their £12m spent on improvements. Where exactly have these improvements been made?”

ANDY HOLDWORTH: “Came along there from Oxford to M3 yesterday. Awful conditions heavy rain, fog, awful visibility and still see idiots speeding and no lights on.”

KATHRYN WHITBY: “Politicians have been ‘wringing their hands’ for decades, yet they still won’t pay for the necessary upgrades, like a hard shoulder/refuges.”

JESSICA EBBERSON: “It is not the road, it’s the drivers that cause accidents."

MARTIN WAKEFIELD: “It’s the stupid selfish way people drive not the road.” TAFFY ABBOTT: “Martin Wakefield you have hit the nail on the head there mate! We see it every day don’t we?”

MARTIN WAKEFIELD: “Every day there is speeding, undertaking, drivers on mobile phones. I even saw a woman driving with a child on her lap on Monday on the M40.”

OXFORD MAIL READER: “The right lane is for overtaking but mostly all of you are using it as a normal lane! This is not only A34, this is national behaviour.”

STEVE BAILEY: “You need average speed cameras along the whole stretch.”

MARTIN LAY: “Some are driving these fast cars and are only interested in themselves. We were on the M40, M42 and M6 yesterday and it was totally about them tailgating, overtaking and speeding in the outside lane. And of course they blame everyone else for disasters and never get caught by the absent police.”

SHIRLEY EDWARDS: “It is the drivers, not the road. Too many people in a hurry.”

AVY BHANDARI: “Firstly, it needs speed cameras with speed limit of 60mph and second thing - two lanes are not enough for the traffic flow that has been constantly increasing for many years.”

AVY POKHREL: “Come back to Finland, we do have safe highways with speed cameras.”

JACKIE BILLINGTON: “£12m spent on road safety? Where exactly? Oh probably £1m on improving a lay-by, another £1m on cutting back grass verges and hedges in these lay-bys, you know real stuff that help motorists.”

STEVE HILL: “Jackie Billington don’t forget Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and utterly pointless 20mph limits, sometimes on main A-roads. The budget has to be spent on something.”

JACKIE BILLINGTON: “Steve Hill absolutely! Totally pointless, pushes any problems further along.”

CLAIRE GREGORY: “And that’s just to ‘look’ at it before they even start anything physical.”

CONNOR CONSYRAG: “The A34 is not a motorway but some drivers want to drive at 70-plus mph. This requires more planning, more distance between vehicles and using indicators to communicate intentions.”

OXFORD MAIL READER: “Too many drivers come off a slip road without pausing let alone stopping.”

ANDY BROWN: “The road is to blame as well - far too many of the slip roads either aren’t long enough or you can’t see the oncoming traffic until you’re by the road - joining from Didcot heading to Oxford is a good example.” COLIN STRAUGHAN: “Newsflash! The A34 hasn’t been great for decades.”
