Four flood alerts in place for Oxfordshire on Boxing Day

However, the Environment Agency said flooding of properties was 'not currently expected' in any of the areas.

It is a very different picture to last Christmas, when the Environment Agency published 29 flood warnings covering the whole county after torrential rain. A water main burst in an already flooded area in Islip, causing further disruption.

River Evenlode from Moreton in Marsh to Cassington and also the River Glyme at Wootton and Woodstock

Levels on the River Evenlode were said late on Christmas Day to be high - but steady or falling.

However, further rainfall overnight between Christmas Day and Boxing Day meant a further risk of rainfall, especially in the areas around Shipton-under-Wychwood.

The Environment Agency said: “Further locally heavy rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours. We expect river levels to begin rising overnight. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

River Thame and Chalgrove Brook

Levels on the River Thame have risen after heavy rainfall over the festive weekend.

Some flooding of low-lying land, footpaths and roads is expected, especially in the Aylesbury area. Flooding is not expected to hit homes.

The Environment Agency said the flood alert covered the River Thame from Marsworth to Dorchester and includes the villages and towns of: Long Marston, Rowsham, North Aylesbury, Cuddington, Thame, Shabbington, Ickford, Waterperry, Cuddesdon, Wheatley, Quarrendon, Drayton St Leonard, Overy, the Chalgrove Brook at Chalgrove and Stadhampton

River Ray and its tributaries from Shipton Lee to and including Islip

Levels on the River Ray have fallen ‘but will be sensitive to further rainfall’, the Environment Agency said.

River levels were likely to remain high over the coming days, particularly in and around Islip.

Flooding to low-lying roads and footpaths was expected to continue, ‘especially in the Lower Arncott area’.

Flooding of properties was not expected.

Langford and Wendlebury Brooks from Stratton Audley down to near Merton

Levels on Langford Brook had fallen on Christmas Day – but were said to remain sensitive to any further rainfall overnight into Boxing Day.

Flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths in the Bicester area was possible.

However, property flooding was not expected.
