A man in his 90s died after his Rover 75 struck a VW Golf head-on near Bicester – and the ambulance taking him to hospital was involved in a separate crash.

The Rover driver suffered serious injuries in the crash on the A4421 between Bicester and Buckingham at around 3.30pm on Thursday, December 23.

The ambulance taking him to hospital was involved in a ‘minor’ crash with an Audi A8 around a mile away from the first collision, police said.

The man, 90s, died at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His next of kin have been informed.

Investigating officer Sgt Dominic Mahon of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are investigating the circumstances around these two collision in which a man has sadly died.

“His family are being supported and our thoughts remain with them at what must be a very difficult time.

“We are asking anyone who witnessed or has dash-cam footage of either of these incidents to please come forward and contact Thames Valley Police on 101 quoting reference 43210577513.”

Police said officers were called to reports of the first crash, involving three cars, at around 3.30pm.

A red VW Golf and the maroon Rover 75 struck each other head-on on the A4421 between the Bicester Heritage Centre and the Stratton Audley junction. A red Audi A3 then hit the Rover 75.

A woman in her 50s, the driver of the Golf, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Audi received only minor injuries.

The second collision – involving the ambulance and an Audi A8 – happened at around 4.50pm on the A4421 at the junction with Skimmingdish Lane.

No one has been arrested in connection with either crash.
