This is the moment James Snell mounted the kerb and made off across playing fields in an attempt to evade the police.

The 40-year-old tried to shake off the police, speeding away when they tried to pull over his people carrier in Kidlington.

The after dark pursuit saw Snell nose his car onto Orchard Recreation Ground, driving along footpaths before ploughing past a fenced-off play area and across a football field.

He was jailed for two years at Oxford Crown Court this week and banned from driving for three years.

Welcoming the sentence, PC Jon Simpkins said: “Mr Snell led officers on a dangerous vehicle pursuit around Kidlington on a busy evening having just committed a high value shop lifting in Oxford.

“He showed no regard for the safety of the public in his effort to get away from officers.

“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offences committed and provides some reassurance that he will not pose a risk to other road users for the foreseeable future.”

Snell, of Evans Lane, Kidlington, admitted dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent and theft at an earlier hearing.

Sending him to jail, Recorder John Hardy QC told him: “You’re evidently not an unintelligent man and I don’t mean that patronisingly. You beat class As [drugs] or it will beat you. And if it beats you at 50 years of age you’re in the grave.”
