Last weekend, Didcot Railway Centre saw the start of their Steam Into Christmas events.

Visitors where able to climb aboard a train of vintage carriages for a steam train ride to meet Father Christmas.

The event, now sold out, is the last outdoor event the centre will have this year.

Clive Hetherington, chief executive of the Great Western Society - who operates the Railway Centre - explained that this is due to the cold temperatures.

He said: "The museum will be opened for people who want to visit, but there won't be any steam engines moving. But we will have major galas in March."

That same weekend, the Wantage Silver Band was very busy spreading Christmas cheer in South Oxfordshire.

Their busy weekend started with Wantage Dickensian Evening on Friday, followed by carolling at the Didcot Railway Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

Just like Steam into Christmas, bandmaster Eileen Sykes explained they are almost fully booked for the rest of the year’s festivities.

She said: “It was a very busy weekend. It is nice to be out and to be able to entertain people again. I believe the band members had a good time and people enjoyed hearing the music!”

Before the pandemic they use to go around the streets knocking door to door collecting donations for the band or for a charity, but this year everything is being organised through bookings.

The band’s busy week will continue on December 8 with the Trulocks Way Carols in Wantage, followed by two more events on December 9, one at Pegasus Court in Wantage and at Hendred School in Hendred.

Steam Into Christmas will run at Didcot's Railway Centre December 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19 plus 21, 22 and 23.

The Centre is a former Great Western Railway engine-shed and locomotive stabling point which has been converted into a railway museum and preservation engineering site.
