There is a chance Oxford could be in for a White Christmas this year, as bookies are placing their odds for the big day.

The definition of a White Christmas from the Met Office is for one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December somewhere in the UK.

Despite predictions from the Met Office that this Christmas could turn out to be a mild one, bookies are optimistic that Oxford will see the white stuff at some point on Christmas.

Both Ladbrokes and Paddy Power have said there is 5/1 chance of snow falling on Christmas day.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Oxford punters dreaming of a White Christmas may well get their wish if the latest odds are anything to go by, with the white stuff looking likely to make an appearance across the UK on December 25th."

A spokesperson for Paddy Power added that “in case it’s helpful that’s an implied probability of 16.7% of it happening”.

These predictions come as the Met Office has said the Christmas period will be milder than early December.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Going into the Christmas period, it is likely to be milder than earlier in the month, with temperatures near to, or above normal, although some colder spells remain possible.

“It is likely to become more settled around Christmas and towards New Year with increased chance of overnight frost and fog during clearer spells.”

The last widespread White Christmas in the UK was back in 2010, when there was snow on the ground at 83 per cent of observing stations (the highest ever recorded) and snow or sleet also fell at 19 per cent of observing stations.
