Our pictures of fundraisers supporting the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford brought a response from readers – let’s have more.

So here is another selection highlighting the generous nature of Oxfordshire people, young, old and others in between.

Oxford bus drivers dressed as gorillas, highwaymen, Rambo and other bizarre characters in 1989 to get the charity ball rolling.

Their fancy dress at the wheel clearly didn’t deter passengers – as you can see in Picture 1, they contributed £5,536.69 to the children’s intensive care unit. Bus drivers, from left, Terry McKay, Tom Gregory, Widge Catlin and Shirley Rose are seen handing the cheque to nurse Maureen Harris and senior staff nurse Ruth Jones.

It was thirsty work for organist Bert Maynard, in Picture 2, who played for 12 hours non-stop at the Dewdrop Inn in Summertown, Oxford, in 1987.

Oxford Mail:

He is seen being given a drink by Chris Booth as he kept the music flowing from 11am to 11pm, raising more than £1,000 for the cardiac ward.

Another marathon was staged by 10 regulars, who played Aunt Sally for 24 hours at the Swan pub in Sutton Courtenay, near Abingdon, in 1985. They raised £1,000 for the special care baby unit.

Chris Potts is seen in Picture 3 taking his turn while other players watch – left to right, Geoff North, Dave Symons, Terry Grundy, Mickey Burton, Colin Herbert, Dave Venables and Pete Merger.

The baby unit also benefited when pupils at the Brett School of Dancing in Oxford held a sponsored event and raised £1,000 in 1982 for a heart recording machine.

The Duchess of Marlborough, right, chairman of the unit’s support group, is seen in Picture 4 with, left to right, Sister Caroline Pepys, Ray Harris and Janice Avery, from the dance group, and Philip Sutton, the unit’s electronics engineer.

Oxford Mail:

Another cheque for the baby unit came from staff at Snips, hairdressers in Bicester Road, Kidlington. They worked for nothing one Sunday in 1981 and donated £505.

Oxford Mail:

Owner Norman Davies, right in Picture 5, presents the cheque to Dr Andrew Wilkinson and Sister Pam Walton.

Oxford Mail:

Beryl Read, of Stanton Harcourt, near Witney, left in Picture 6, organised car boot sales for the children’s ward.
