Members of Round Tables in Oxfordshire have raised thousands of pounds over the years.

There cannot be many charities and good causes that have not benefited from their goodwill.

Often members have devoted considerable time and energy to their fundraising efforts, like the cyclists we see in Picture 1.

Kidlington Round Tablers set off on the 10-seater machine in 1981 to raise money for Andy Widdowson, who had been injured in a rugby accident.

The 35-mile route took riders from Bicester to Oxford and Abingdon and ended at Exeter Hall, Kidlington.

Another cycle ride took place at Witney in 1984, but this time, 30 Round Tablers didn’t move an inch.

It was a 24-hour static event to raise £1,500 to help buy a £10,000 minibus for Springfield special school in the town.

Alan Bailey, chairman of the Oxfordshire Cleft Lip and Palate Association, gave a talk to Bicester Round Table in 1986 and within minutes of finishing, was handed a £500 cheque.

The money put the association within reach of the £8,000 it needed to buy a nasendoscope, for doctors at the Radcliffe Infirmary to see inside children’s mouths and noses with greater accuracy.

Tom Byrne, chairman of Bicester Round Table, second from left in Picture 3, is seen with, left to right, Penny Bailey, Alan Bailey and daughter Karen, and Sister Judy Taylor.
