They were members of the Oxford YMCA boxing club, one of the city’s most active and successful.

Reader Gilbert Simms has sent in the picture from the 1950s showing his father, Les ‘Tiger’ Simms, on the far right and Peter Couling on the far left.

The boxers were going from strength to strength after raising £17,000 to turn the old slipper baths in Catherine Street, East Oxford, into a gym.

There was plenty of excitement when the Lord Mayor of Oxford, the Rev Tony Williamson, arrived to perform the official opening in 1982.

The building included a practice ring, punch bags and a non-slip competition floor. Chairman Mr L N ‘Nip’ Parsons paid tribute at the opening ceremony to the boxing club’s chief coach, Mick Ganley, and his assistants, and to YMCA secretary Tony Heath “whose faith and enthusiasm persuaded a rather conservative management committee to go in for this project”.
