COVID-19 case rates in Oxfordshire are ‘notably reducing’ says Oxfordshire County Council’s director of public health.

Ansaf Azhar told the council’s health improvement partnership board case rates have declined and that vaccinations among children were continuing to have a positive effect.

He said: “We have seen some notable reductions in case rates in Oxfordshire. Both in Oxfordshire and the rest of the county, we have seen a decline in case rates.”

However, he warned there had been a ‘significant rise’ in cases among children aged 10-14.

He said: “Fortunately with the rise in vaccinations in children, where in Oxfordshire we have a particularly high uptake, we’re seeing increased immunity.

“We saw cases rise quite rapidly in the week up to November 3, but in Oxfordshire we bucked that trend.

“The key message is that we’re seeing a decline in case rates due to improved immunity in younger people.

“We are seeing a slight increase in the five to nine age group – this age group is not vaccinated so we are seeing these increased case rates.”

Mr Azhar also urged people to continue going to hospital, in order to look after their health.

He said: “Hospitals are open as usual so please take care of your health.”
