Sausage roll fans in Oxford can celebrate as Greggs in Cornmarket has reopened after remaining shut for more than two months.

Difficulties with a nearby collapsed sewer forced the branch - one of the chain's largest - to close on August 17.

Staff are once again serving customers and the bakery looked busy at lunchtime.

Managers said earlier that the branch near Carfax, one of the biggest in the country, had been forced to shut on August 17 due to 'technical issues' involving Thames Water.

Then Thames Water provided more details.

Thames Water pokesman James Presland said earlier: "We’re sorry for any disruption caused by a collapsed sewer under the pedestrianised area.

"We’ve been using tankers to pump away any excess waste and will now be digging down in to the footpath to create a new connection to the main sewer.”

Thames Water has been keeping in close contact with Greggs for the duration of the work to keep the chain fully updated.

There were celebrations and queues when Greggs opened the branch in March 2020 - the first in the city centre.

It features a spacious seating area upstairs and has competition close by in McDonald's.

Greggs is now selling mince pies and its original Festive Bake, which launched in 2009, will be joined by the brand-new Vegan Festive Bake.

A spokesman for the chain said this followed 'surging public demand for a vegan-friendly take on the Christmas classic.'

The pasty is filled with Quorn pieces, sage and onion stuffing, a vegan bacon crumb, and finished with a cranberry and sage sauce.

In recent years, vegans have approached the bakery pleading for a vegan version of its cult pasty.

Hannah Squirrell, customer director at Greggs, said: “The Festive Bake is the latest iconic Greggs Bake to receive a vegan-friendly makeover, and it retains all the classic Christmassy flavours of the original.

“There’s nothing better over the festive season than tucking into delicious Christmas food, and we’re confident that customers will love our latest tasty Bakes.”
