You could never accuse the Scouting fraternity of Oxfordshire of being idle.

They are always on the move or using their imagination to create things, as these pictures from the Oxford Mail archives show.

Picture 1 was taken in 1976 as Cub Scouts from eight packs in the Cowley area prepared for a sponsored walk in Florence Park.

The 120 who took part hoped to raise £75 for deaf children at South Oxford Middle School, but ended up handing over a cheque for £360. Bernard Braley, head of the deaf unit, said: “It is a terrific amount and we are very surprised. But, of course, we can put it to good use.”

Picture 2 shows a group of Scouts who were leaving for a two-week stay in Malcesine in Northern Italy in 1973.

Teenagers Bryan Parkinson, back left, of Headington, Robert Werlinger, back right, of Cowley, Kevin Spiers, of Littlemore, and Nigel Samuels, of Wheatley, volunteered for the trip which included joint exercises with Italian Scouts.

Another energetic group, in Picture 3, organised a three-week cycling tour of Brittany – on tandems. The team – Michael Eddington, Robert Bosson, Paul Tompkins, Paul Miles, John Parsons, Paul Cosh, Peter Lee and Richard Bond – were members of the 22nd Oxford Venture Scout Unit. Other Scouts preferred a more creative role, including those from the Cowley district in Picture 4.

They contributed to a painting exhibition at the 36th Oxford headquarters in Church Way, Iffley, in 1974.

Picture 5 shows another imaginative group from the Cowley area, Cub Scouts who created an impressive model warship. They are, left to right, Robert Innes, Andrew Innes, Stephen Nutt, Chris Summer and Neil Cranston. The model was on display at Cowley United Reformed Church in 1976.

Scouts from Littlemore, in Picture 6, went abseiling down a 25ft cliff face at Bletchingdon quarry, near Bicester, in 1974.

Groups from across Britain spent a weekend trying to raise £100,000 to buy a Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboat.
