A dad who missed more than £12,000 in child support payments said it was ‘fair enough’ he was being sent to prison.
Oxford magistrates decided in August that Jamie Granito should serve 42 days as every effort to get him to pay the outstanding sum had been exhausted.
Among the options that had been tried – unsuccessfully – were orders requiring the 44-year-old to pay the debt from his work income, allowing him further time to pay and keeping him in a police station overnight.
He owed £12,578 according to the Child Support Agency, which brought the case.
Told that a warrant had been issued for his detention for 42 days, Granito, of Van Diemans, Stanford in the Vale, replied: “Fair enough.”
He went on to protest that he’d been told the hearing would be at 3pm and that he could see the duty solicitor.
