A GIANT puppet which represents refugee children is set to meet Oxford’s very own large Alice puppet next week.

Little Amal, a three and a half metre high puppet of a nine-year-old Syrian girl, landed in the UK yesterday.

The puppet, which requires three people to operate, started its journey in Turkey in July and has travelled across Europe, in order to raise awareness of the problems faced by young migrants.

On Tuesday, Little Amal will arrive in Oxford, where the puppet will be greeted by The Story Museum’s own Alice in Wonderland figure.

The museum is working with more than 24 different creative and community partners to create a free outdoor event called ‘Amal Meets Alice’.

The two will meet at Oxford Botanic Garden, with members of the public invited to join the procession in Broad Street.

A welcome song is being composed by The Story Museum’s Holly Khan, alongside pupils from St Gregory the Great Catholic School and St Barnabas CE Primary School.

The public is invited to participate by learning the song either on the museum’s website or at one of two open rehearsals at the museum this Saturday and Sunday at 2pm.

A project called ‘Beyond Amal’ between the museum and Oxford charity, Asylum Welcome, will see training in oral storytelling, developing communication skills, confidence and resilience.
