A police and crime commissioner candidate accused of failing to declare a drink driving rap on his nomination papers will appear before Oxford magistrates this morning.

Jonathon Seed, 63, who was standing in the Wiltshire and Swindon crime commissioner election in May, was charged after an investigation by Thames Valley Police.

The councillor is accused of failing to tell election officials he had been convicted in 1993 of drink driving. The conviction, although long spent, could have seen Seed sent to prison – automatically disqualifying him from the police and crime commissioner role.

The election was subsequently re-run, with Conservative candidate Philip Wilkinson claiming victory.

Seed is expected to appear before Oxford Magistrates’ Court this morning.
