Competition was fierce when Cub Scouts arrived at Witney Scout headquarters with their best polished conkers.
The district’s second annual conker contest in 1976 attracted more than 70 Cub Scouts from West Oxfordshire towns and villages.
With a strong arm and a steady aim, they began in turn to lay about each other’s conkers until a team of six boys from the West Evenlode Falcon pack emerged as winners.
