Six people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a university in Oxford's twin city of Perm in Russia.

The assailant opened fire after walking onto campus on Monday morning.

Students and teachers barricaded themselves in their buildings, while others were seen to be jumping out of windows.

Russian police say they have wounded and detained the attacker.

It is reported by the BBC that more than 20 people were injured in the shooting.

The location of the incident was Perm State University in the city of Perm.

It is a city that is twinned with Oxford.

The two cities have been linked since 1990, but didn't become officialiy twinned until 1995.

Last year plans to celebrate that 25th anniversary had to be moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
