RESIDENTS have until the end of the month to have their say on plans for 42 new homes in Oxford.

A public consultation on the regeneration of Underhill Circus in Barton comes to an end on October 1.

Plans are in place for 42 new homes to be developed at the site, replacing seven existing properties.

There will be a mixture of shared ownership properties and new homes for social rent, incorporating 32 one and two-bedroom flats and 10 three-bedroom houses.

The consultation reads online: “Oxford needs homes. Our city is amongst the least affordable in the country and there are currently 2,850 families on our waiting list for council housing.

“Oxford City Housing Ltd (OCHL) has been set up by Oxford City Council to deliver affordable new homes and help tackle the city’s housing need.

“One of the sites OCHL is proposing to redevelop is Underhill Circus in Barton, where the aim is to deliver 42 new homes and re-provide 460m² of commercial or retail space whilst also improving the quality of public space.

“OCHL consulted local residents and community groups in December 2018 on how the site could look in the future and presented two possible options for how the site could be regenerated, asking for feedback on these.”

Plans to either refurbish or redevelop have previously been considered, with the current proposal being to demolish the existing buildings and redevelop the site in order to create a new neighbourhood centre.

The new scheme would include a four-storey block facing the neighbourhood centre, with space for a supermarket at ground floor level.

Two and three-storey buildings are proposed everywhere else.

Meanwhile, a new area of public space will be created between the development and the Barton Neighbourhood Centre, providing a link from Underhill Circus through to the green space and Bayswater Brook to the north.

This space will feature trees, planting and seating areas, available to both new and existing residents.

The city council expects to submit a planning application this autumn.

If planning permission is granted and funding is secured, construction could begin onsite in late 2022.
