A four-star Oxford hotel has announced the completion of a major refurbishment, following a £2.5m investment in a 17-bedroom extension and new Champagne Terrace Bar and Lounge.

The Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel in High Street, owned and managed by investment company Amaris Hospitality, has welcomed the completion the substantial transformation of a new accommodation wing.

Following the refurbishment, the hotel now offers 81 bedrooms, renovated to incorporate the traditional feel of the 17th century coaching inn within the original hotel.

As well as the new bedrooms, there is also a purpose-built Champagne Terrace Bar and Lounge that offers afternoon tea and drinks to hotel guests, visitors to Oxford and residents, with stunning views of the historic city.

Work started on site in early 2020.

Speaking at a launch event to showcase the newly refurbished hotel, Bradlee Pillay, general manager of Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel, said: “We are very excited to announce the extension of 17 new bedrooms and our newly built Taittinger Champagne Terrace Bar and Lounge located within our 17th Century coaching inn.

"This has been an exciting project to be a part of, bringing in additional capacity to the Oxford market, at a time we see when we are seeing a growing need for hotel accommodation in the area.

"Following the impact of the pandemic, it is great to see demand returning to Oxford, and we are excited to offer a blend of modern interiors and contemporary charm to our residents, as well as to be able to cater to larger groups visiting the city or hosting events.”

The refurbishment has been part of a multi-million-pound investment programme by Amaris to transform several of its landmark hotels including DoubleTree Angel Kings Cross, DoubleTree Edinburgh Airport and The Mercure Dunkenhalgh Hotel & Spa.

The announcement came shortly after The Randolph Hotel reopened after a major refurbishment.

The Premier Inn chain has also boosted the tourist trade by opening a new hotel opposite Westgate and another at West Way, Botley.

The easyHotel chain has been building a new hotel in Banbury Road, Summertown and is taking bookings from the end of next month.
