St Mary Magdalen Church in Oxford has organised an abseil that works like that for the very first Muriel’s Day, in memory of a remarkable member of its community.

Several days a week Muriel Hunt was a volunteer both at her local Oxfam shop and the League of Friends West Wing café in Oxford’s John Radcliffe hospital.

She held bring-and-buy teas raising money for war-damaged Syrian children.

And she learned signing and was active on behalf of the Oxford Diocesan Council for the Deaf.

Oxford Mail:

Mrs Hunt was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2017 for charitable services in Oxford.

Her story has already inspired more 40 people to complete the abseil on Saturday, when abseilers will be raising money for charities including Oxfam and Christian Aid.
