Oxford Mail readers have been giving their views on the government’s decision to abandon vaccine passports.

There were plans to introduce vaccine passports at the end of this month. for access into nightclubs and large events.

But Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said the passports will no longer go ahead, although the plan will be kept in reserve over autumn or winter.

Some readers on the newspaper’s Facebook page backed the decision, while others were opposed to it.

BEN SMITH: "Finally common sense prevails, although bit too late for the Tory party shame on them and shame on the people who condoned these vaccine passports! They were a complete attack on civil liberties.

“Next stop the travel restrictions which i believe is Sajid’s plan. A lot of people will be questioning why they had the vaccine soon. People power will always win - people will not accept attacks on their civil liberties.”

PAULINE HOLDEN: “Ridiculous. Then in next statement says there could be another lockdown. What do they expect? Country has gone mad full of do gooders."

JAMES ASHDOWN: “It’s a good thing! It’s basic human rights not to be dictated to by any government and if it was to go ahead there would be rebellion.

“It’s down to the individual if they have it or not!”

MATT WHALEY: “I feel like I missed the bit in the Human rights acts that referred to being able to go to a pub.”

MARTIN HEPWORTH: “Open ended passports is the issue. Scotland have put three weekly review periods in their legislation.”

STEVE PATRICK: “Martin Hepworth I wouldn’t go by what Scotland’s doing.”

STEPHANIE WRIGHT: “It makes the world a scarier and more inaccessible place for the vulnerable.”

SAMANTHA HIBBARD: “Good thing - it’s making people divide - like rich or poor.

“It’s up to people if they have the vaccine or not.. people should not be penalised for having there own beliefs. Not every one can have the vaccine.”

MATT THOMAS: “Good.”

RACHAEL BEDDING: “Good.”

KAREN ROPER: “I went to the National Television Awards and they glanced at my Covid vaccine certificate on my phone. No scanning. No verification that I was the person named on the vaccine. They are literally just going through the motions.”

BRYAN KING: “Good or bad, the reason for the U-turn is purely political. Let’s not sugar coat it otherwise. With the Lib Dems opposing, the libertarian wing of the Tory party opposing, and Labour divided on whether to support, oppose or abstain, it might only have gotten through a parliamentary vote with Scottish Nationalist support, which would be a massive political embarrassment that the Tories can’t afford to risk.”

ALEX NICOLAOU: “Isn’t that coming from the same government that said no tax hikes would happen? Vaccine passports are on the way for nightclubs and large events.”

PETER WILLOUGHBY: “Good.”

PARVEEN DEVLIN: “Great news, just sorry for the ones who were forced to take it.”

CLAIRE CHEVIN: “This is bad.”

SANDRA TUSTIN: “Too late for all the young people who have been ‘blackmailed’ into having a vaccine they were unsure of!”

ELI HOUSE: “It doesn’t make any difference to a lot of people. What strikes me though is that a lot of young people would take a vaccine just to be able to go to a nightclub when they could be doing lots of other things with their time. Plenty of other ways to have fun outside of nightclubs. They aren’t the only way to have fun.”

KIERA O’MAHONY: “Not all young people are the same, just like not all men and not all women are the same. Don’t get me wrong there are obviously people who would just take the vaccine to be able to go clubbing or to the pub, but not everyone.”

MARTYN WEBB: “Taking into consideration that vaccinated people can still catch Covid, can still get ill and can still pass it on to everyone else, then a vaccine passport would really be a waste of time anyway.”

YVETTE FREEMAN-KEEP: “Good idea unless you want that whole industry to collapse.”

MA QAZI: “Waste of money. We already have vaccine certification so if needed then that can be used.”

MICHELLE CHI SIM: “Brilliant news! It’s discriminatory, divisive and a blatant attack on our human rights.”
