A council meeting is set to beheld to resolve the problem of cancelled garden waste collections.

South Oxfordshire District Council will be holding an extraordinary full council meeting to discuss the issue of the garden waste service, which is currently temporarily suspended.

Garden waste collections - run by Biffa as part of a joint contract with both South and Vale district councils - were suspended without notice at the start of August.

The councils’ bin crews have been prioritising the collection of food waste, recycling and general waste collections following government guidelines in a bid to reduce the disruption to waste collections.

The disruption is due to the ongoing issues of a shortage of HGV drivers who are needed to drive the councils’ waste collection vehicles.

Emily Smith, Leader of Vale of White Horse District Council said: “Until it is back up and running again, people can take garden waste to the household waste recycling centres or they could, if feasible, try composting."

Councillor Simon Howell, leader of the Conservative Group at Vale of the White Horse District Council said: “This is an appalling situation. Waste has been building up for well over a month - many residents in the Vale haven’t had their garden waste collected since the middle of July - yet everyone is still being charged for the service. "

He added: "On behalf of residents, we are calling this extraordinary meeting to get action, to implement a plan and treat residents fairly”

The meeting will take place on Friday September 24 at 2pm.
