A dozen cyclists have wheeled away from an Oxfordshire castle on a three-day adventure that they hope will raise thousands for a dementia charity.

Kelly’s Heroes, named in memory of Oxfordshire woman Kelly Pope, who lost her life to cancer, will ride 330 miles from Broughton Castle, near Banbury, to Britain’s most westerly point in aid of Dementia Active.

The 12 men plan to cover more than 100 miles a day – reaching Land’s End in Cornwall on Saturday afternoon.

On Thursday, they set off from the medieval moated manor house and stopped for a snap in Bristol before making it to their first stopover in Somerset.

Organiser Darren Kinch, from Stadhampton, said: “This year it was someone’s daft idea to cycle from here to Lands End in three days. It’s 330 miles in total. We’ve put in a silly amount of hours in training.”

Andy Gill of Dementia Active said of the fundraising ride: “Things like this will enable us to at some point lease a building in Banbury, which will enable us to double what we do.”

The cyclists have raised more than £6,000 so far. To donate, visit: uk.gofundme.com/f/kellys-heroes.
