A bicycle thief has appeared before a judge after he failed to turn up at court last week.

Alan Goodman, 38, had been due for sentence at Oxford Crown Court last Thursday having previously admitted stealing three bicycles and threatening a security guard with a bike lock.

When the defendant, who was photographed in his 2015 mugshot wearing a jumper with a distinctive bicycle motif, failed to turn up a warrant was issued for his arrest.

And on Wednesday, Goodman appeared before Judge Ian Pringle QC having been arrested on the warrant. The defendant, who has a care of address of Cecil Sharp Way, Oxford, admitted breaching his bail and his case was adjourned to September 17 for sentence.

Last month, a district judge sitting at Oxford Magistrates’ Court sent the case to the crown court for sentence after concluding that her powers weren’t harsh enough to deal with him.

The court heard how he broke into a supposedly secure cycle shed to steal a PhD student’s £320 push bike – and brazenly stole two other bicycles in full view of CCTV or a guard.

Goodman was caught on camera picking the lock of a £450 bike left outside a Didcot Sainsbury’s on April 16, 2020.

On June 11 this year he took a £320 bicycle left in a cycle store at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine on the John Radcliffe Hospital site. The following month, on July 6, a security guard tried to stop the thief after spotting him use a pipe cutter to steal a bicycle in Keble Road. He swung a lock at the guard then scarpered with the bike.
