Music giant HMV is bringing 15 new jobs to Oxford as it opens a store in Cornmarket.

The 9,000 sq ft store will be situated in the former Gap store in the Clarendon Centre. The Gap branch shut last month as part of a nationwide closure programme.

HMV had a store in Cornmarket until it closed in 2014.

The chain survived in a number of different guises before it was taken over by Canadian Doug Putman, who has revived it in the UK.

HMV said the store, opening the middle of next month, would feature 16,000 products over two floors, with an entire floor dedicated to 5,000 different vinyl records.

There will be a new HMV delivers service, allowing customers to order any item not in store direct to their door.

In addition to vinyl, the store will also stock 5,000 different CDs, 3,000 films and TV shows on DVD and 4K HD Blu Ray, as well as 3,000 pop culture products.

The first 100 customers will receive a goodie bag- the exact opening date has not yet been revealed.

Store manager Paul Williams said: “We’re very glad to be back in Oxford, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to the new shop.

"We’re still recruiting for new roles, so if you’re passionate about pop culture and love all things music and film we’d love to hear from you.”

HMV managing director Phil Halliday said: “As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we’re thrilled to be coming back to the heart of Oxford.

"The new store has an amazing range of vinyl, and it’s great to be able to offer incredible turntables from local distributor Henley Audio.

"As the UK continues to open up, we’ll be offering in-store events and signings from top artists and performances from local artists."

Leader of Oxford City Council Susan Brown said: "HMV is an iconic brand, which we’re delighted to welcome back to Oxford city centre.

"Many people, including me, were sad to see the previous store on Cornmarket close. It is great news that they are back.

"The new store will bring more jobs to Oxford and will be a good addition to our vibrant city centre.
