Oxford has been named the fifth worst city in the UK for a good night’s sleep.

Research carried out by experts at Sleepseeker, looked at the number of sleep problem related searches in UK’s most populated cities and towns to come up with this list.

With 5,422 searches per 100,000 people, Oxford is in fifth place for worst sleepers, only behind Cambridge (5,831 searches), Peterborough (5,812 searches), Manchester (5,574 searches) and Glasgow (5,523 searches).

Cardiff is the city with the fewest sleep problems in the country with only 1,640 searches per 100,000 people, which is two and half times fewer than the national average.

Four of the top five cities for a good night sleep in the UK are situated by the sea, suggesting that the sea air could have a positive impact on the ability to sleep well.

The same study also reveals UK as Europe’s most fatigued country, and sixth in the world, based on a number of different factors such as the number of hours worked per year and average screen time per day.

Sleep is incredibly important for mental and physical health and experts advise regular exercise, controlled diet, meditation, and a routine bedtime as ways to improve quality of sleep.

Sleepseeker have shared their top 5 tips to ensure a better night’s sleep

Diet and exercise - Being active during the day and avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and large meals in the hours leading up to bedtime.

Avoid using phone before bedtime - The blue light prevents the production of the melatonin hormone, which aids sleep.

Practice meditating - Meditation is a great way to destress and create inner calmness before bed.

Create a comfortable space – Making the bedroom a snug environment for sleeping. It’s also important to ensure the right temperature in the room to avoid a restless night.

Consistency is key - Going to sleep at the same time every night is good for the body clock and sleep consistency.
