A YEAR after being postponed, people were finally able to sing along to ABBA classics in Bicester at the weekend.

Tribute act ABBA Stars UK, who have performed in Bicester before, took centre stage in Garth Park on Saturday.

It was the town's second community event in 16 months after lockdown restrictions lifted and followed the Superhero Day event which took place two weeks ago.

Residents who went to the ticketed ABBA event sang along to the well-known tunes, with many taking to Facebook to express how much they enjoyed the night.

Helen Bramley said: "Fantastic evening, just what we all needed."

Valerie Evans commented: "It was an enjoyable evening. Very well organised, well done to everyone involved."

Nicola Holloway said: "A totally awesome night, so nice after such a long time."

A total of 1,218 people went to the event and organisers Bicester Town Council are glad that it was successful.

Councillor Richard Mould, leader of the council, said: "The ABBA concert was a huge success, it was the second full house following the Superhero’s day 10 days earlier.

"The ABBA tribute band always puts on a great show with music appealing to all ages which was very much in evidence on Saturday night with the audience singing and dancing along to all those well-known tunes.

"We can all look forward to another night of enjoyment in two weeks time with the 'I love the 80’s night' on August 28."

Garth Park will be alive again next weekend as 80s cover band Sledgehammer perform.

Tickets are limited to 1,000 and priced at £10 for adults, £5 for under 16s, and children under five are free.

Sledgehammer last took to the Garth Park stage in August 2019 to a sell-out event. By day they do jobs in medicine, IT and teaching, but at the weekend they pick up their musical instruments and take to the stage.

The band is made up of Russ Fray on vocals, Simon Bays on guitar, Al Grout on bass and Phil Heard on drums.

They will cover about 30 songs.
