Oxfordshire residents are forgetting to account for estate agent fees and removal services when moving home, a new survey reveals.

A poll of 2,098 people noted that 48 per cent of movers find estate agent fees the most unexpected cost when buying a home.

The research conducted by developer David Wilson Homes also suggests removal costs were another expense that home buyers didn’t account for when planning their purchase, with 47 per cent of respondants mentioning this.

According to the Homeowner’s Alliance, most moves (41.57 per cent) happen on a Friday. Excluding Sundays, Monday is no one's favourite day to move as the least amount of moves happen on that day.

Moving on a weekend tends to be more expensive than on weekdays as they’re more in demand.

Rob Allen, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes Southern, suggests buying a property early in order to make considerable savings during the purchase process.

Oxford Mail:

He said: “Buying a property before it’s been completed, sometimes even before construction has begun, is a great investment as you can agree a price beforehand and it’s possible the property will be worth significantly more than what you paid for it by the time you move in – meaning you could make a profit on your home in the future.

“As the day of moving into your new home may be a little way off from the time of reserving, this gives you ample opportunity to set aside the money for the removals and ensure things run effortlessly.”

The housebuilder has launched a scheme called Movemaker, which aims to help buyers bypass estate agent fees.
