There are more than 80 dangerous wild animals being kept privately in Oxfordshire, research from an animal charity has revealed.

In West Oxfordshire, 84 animals including lions, wolves and tigers are being kept by a single private owner.

A survey by Born Free, a charity focused on animal welfare and conservation, revealed that a staggering 3,951 dangerous wild animals are licensed to be kept privately in Great Britain.

However, there could be many more animals being kept without a licence.

A total of 210 private addresses - across 129 local authorities - hold licences to keep dangerous wild animals such as big cats, primates and venomous reptiles.

The animals are kept by legal licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

Born Free confirmed all the animals in West Oxfordshire are owned by a man called Jim Clubb, who featured in Ross Kemp’s recent ITV documentary Britain’s Tiger Kings.

Although Clubb’s site is called Heythrop Zooological Gardens, the charity said it is not a licensed zoo and is, therefore, required to hold Dangerous Wild Animal licences for the animals housed there.

Licensed zoos are exempt from requiring a Dangerous Wild Animal licences as they are covered by the Zoo Licensing Act 1981.
