Oxfordshire’s population grew last year as UK residents chose to move to the county amid a growing demand for housing.

Newly released figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the numbers of people moving to Oxfordshire has grown by 2,868.

The data is divided within the county by its district councils, namely Cherwell, Oxford, South Oxfordshire, West Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse.

Except for Oxford, all four councils saw an increase in net migration, with South Oxfordshire showing the biggest increase (1,665), followed by Vale of White Horse (1,414), West Oxfordshire (1,351) and Cherwell (1,348).

Oxford saw its net population fall by 2,910, with 5,119 people moving to London councils and 4,142 to other Oxfordshire councils.

A broad look at the data shows that most people moving to the county are coming from neighbouring countries such as Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, as well as London. 

Within Oxfordshire 6,051 people chose to move elsewhere in the county, finding a home in a different district council.

  • Buckinghamshire – 2,465
  • Northamptonshire – 1,150
  • Reading – 913
  • West Berkshire – 747
  • Birmingham – 708
  • Swindon – 651
  • Scotland - 634
  • Wiltshire – 625
  • Bristol – 586

According to the statistics, 48,925 people moved to Oxfordshire while 46,057 moved away.

Data reveals that the top 3 destinations in both cases remained the same. Scotland and Bristol proved to be a lot more appealing to Oxfordshire residents than our county did to people living on those areas.
