Soldiers from the 11 EOD Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corp, who are responsible for counter terrorist explosive disposal, identified the find as an 18lb shell from 1915.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the police confirmed that the shell was safely removed from the area and destroyed with a controlled explosion in a nearby field owned by a farmer.
