HUNDREDS more Covid-19 infections were recorded in Oxfordshire in the last 24 hours as local authorities continue to open walk-in PCR test centres and vaccine clinics.

Official Government figures show that as of 4pm on Friday, a further 270 new coronavirus cases were registered in the county.

Currently, there are 28 patients with the virus admitted in Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with three of them on ventilation.

The rate of infection in Oxford now stands at 8,446 cases per 100,000 people, lower than the England average of 8,739.

The UK has recorded a further 64 Covid-related deaths and 36,389 new cases with 870 patients admitted to hospital, Public Health England confirmed.

Cases identified through a positive lateral flow test – those which can deliver results within half an hour – will no longer be counted if the person then takes a PCR test, which is sent to a lab to be checked, and receives a negative result within three days.
